The Photo Maniacs

The apartment in which we stay faces an auditorium that hosts parties and wedding events. Today morning, as usual, it was a wedding party. A Sunday wedding party.

A sneak peak into a group, who  made good use of the function to photograph some of their 'precious moments', would lament any old time photographer, who waited for a very special moment to
make its rare appearance, so that he could happily freeze the moment. With the passage of time, the 'right moments' are right there! And with the editing options, it's always right!

As I clicked  their  'photo shoot' from my veranda, I wonder how photography itself has undergone a surprising change over the years, and with it, the purpose and the idea of a photograph.

I  zoom in on these shots, and my mind pictures them on Facebook walls and as WhatsApp display pictures.  I can only think of  the hefty status messages with which these photographs will appear to the world. And the innumerable 'likes' and the remarks, and the praises that these pictures will garner.

Long back I remember Appa clicking our pictures with his Kodak camera when we wondered little about the phenomenon of photography, let alone think about how our pictures would turn out. We gave our gleaming smiles to the camera and then ignored the camera.

Photographs were always treasured , and powerful memories hit me whenever I glance over those pictures.

Photographs were sweeter then. Photographs had a longer story to tell then. Though the photographs didn't get the appreciation of a hundred 'friends', it stood special. I still remember the time when we used to bring home the small photo albums of our friends. Such moments were rare, therefore priced high.

Glimpsing through some photo albums on my PC a couple of months back, I found the carefully planned plethora of photographs bland. The memory associated with many photographs was just about how, where to take the photograph so as to bring out the 'best ' picture ever. The photograph, no longer speaks of the occasion, as the celebration revolves around the photograph, and the occasion fades from the limelight.

Coming back to the boys who captured my attention with their camera mania, I apologize for having sneaked into their private moments...I mean no harm. I just thought you represent a huge crowd I wanted to write about. As I assemble these pictures, I too am an active participant in the 'getting it all 'right' phenomenon', that I have been talking about.

These youngsters have spent no less than 45 minutes to get it right. But at the end of it, it passes off as snapshots reflecting the spirit of the occasion they had come to attend - a wedding function.Though, on long observation, I could only find them curious, anxious and excited about the photograph, caring no less for the occasion.

An occasion to capture some of their 'best' shots. That was all the spirit I observed.

Get it right! yes, we are set!
Is it good ?
Good enough for a dp??
Am I really good?
Hmm...okay, I guess...
Now, this should go as a good Facebook wall picture!
and hopefully a thousand 'likes'!

By the way, who is getting married to whom?! I should ask these boys!
